I am listening to some guys speaking about life for those going to University for the first time. It has provoked me to record my own list of recommendations that means you will make the most it, in a way that glorifies God.
1. Use your freedom wisely. You will have incredible freedom, but make the most of it in a way that honours God.
2. Make friends. Invest in friendships. University is a missionary field. Be with them but dare to be different. One word of warning – choose your closest friends wisely, you may not meet them in week one!
3. Be yourself. Don’t sacrifice this for anyone, any club, any society etc. But be adventurous, seize opportunities and be prepared to make mistakes.
4. Stay away from “relationships” for as long as you can. When Mrs or Mr Right comes along it will probably be easier and more obvious than you anticipated. Enjoy singleness and uncomplicated friendships.
5. Live in same-sex houses. Without stating the obvious, it just makes life easier.
6. Limit your alcohol consumption. Work out your safe capacity and stick to it…. Start as you mean to go on. Get this sorted before Freshers week!!
7. Be a steward of your finances. It’s painful but debt is debt – and sadly you are going to have some. But don’t be so utterly reckless that your future family will end up paying for your lack of self-control.
8. Get involved in a local church NOT just Christian Union. Don’t neglect this. Trust me – I did, and it was a big mistake.
9. Remember God is rich in mercy and we will all make mistakes and stumble in many ways. God is gracious. Learn from your mistakes.
